Tarpon Fishing for Beginners: Tips and Tricks

When it comes to tarpon fishing, there are a few key rules and tips that every beginner should know. Tarpon are known for their strength and acrobatics, making them a thrilling catch for any angler. Tarpon are more prevalent in the warmer months (March-August), so it's important to plan your fishing trips accordingly. Fishing in shallow shoals and beaches is usually the best strategy for targeting big tarpon. However, in some cooler months, checking up deep rivers can also yield good results.

Rule 2: Follow the Bait

One of the best pieces of advice for tarpon fishing is to follow pods of menhaden, LY, or Pogey. Tarpon are often found where the baitfish are abundant. If you hang around an area where the bait is flicking the top of the water for long enough, the tarpon are sure to show themselves.

Rule 3: Time Your Fishing

Tarpon feed most aggressively in the morning, particularly at sunrise, through about noon. During this time, they are actively searching for food and are more likely to strike. However, as the day progresses, the bite may become less predictable. It's still possible to catch tarpon in the afternoon, but the chances may be lower compared to the morning.

These baitfish are natural prey for tarpon and using them as bait can increase your chances of success. Additionally, artificial lures such as swimbaits and topwater plugs can also be effective, especially when targeting tarpon that are actively feeding near the surface. Tip 3: Bow To The King

Hooking a tarpon requires a strong and precise hookset. When you feel a tarpon bite, it's important to quickly and firmly set the hook by reeling in and striking the rod upwards. This action helps drive the hook into the tarpon's hard mouth, increasing the chances of a solid hook-up. As quickly as you set the hook the tarpon will be on the move and ready to perform there acrobatics that have lead to the addiction of tarpon fishing for decades. Try not to be too starstruck we still have work to do. As soon as the tarpon breaches the water throw your rod tip down towards the fish in a bowing motion. This allows enough slack so the tarpon cannot land on a tight line and snap it. If you forget this tip the fish is bound to come off.

Tarpon fishing can sometimes be challenging, and it may take time to hook into a fish. It's essential to be patient and persistent. Keep casting, follow the bait, and stay focused. Tarpon are known for their unpredictable behavior, so even if you don't get a bite right away, don't give up. Stay determined, and your efforts will likely pay off.
